Planning Your Wedding Rehearsal

I’m in the process of getting ready for a rehearsal tonight and I thought this might be a good time to talk about rehearsals. First of all let me say rehearsals, even after all these years of doing them, are my least favorite part of weddings. Frankly, I hate them. No matter how prepared you are (and believe me we are very prepared) they never go perfectly. Someone is late, someone doesn’t show up at all, someone wants to change things, and no one really wants to be there. So, the message here is be very prepared and hope for the best.

How do you prepare for a rehearsal? If you have a planner she will do this for you, if you don’t have a planner but have a church lady she will make an attempt at it (not her fault, she just isn’t involved enough to know everything). But what if you don’t have a planner, what should you do?

First you need to plan the ceremony out carefully on paper. What are the rules of the church, what are the minister’s or priest’s rules for ceremony set up? Who is going to stand where? Who is going to escort who down the aisle? Who will escort your mother, his mother, your grandmother during the processional and the recessional? What music will be played when? Are groomsmen and bridesmaids walking in together, separately, in groups of two’s?
We start with a diagram of the ceremony area. We list each bridesmaid and groomsman in the place they will stand, we even plan for who sits in the family section. Mark my words; you want to leave nothing to chance.

You need to know how many rows family will take up. These family members need to know they will be seated in the family section. At rehearsal, make sure groomsmen know where to seat family and where they can start seating guests. You don’t want Grandma’s seat to be taken by someone you work with.

We start the rehearsal by putting everyone in their place, the minister then runs through his part, we practice the recessional and then come back in practicing the processional. It usually takes two run throughs before everyone is comfortable. Yes, it’s a little backwards, but it works the best by far.

Be sure at the end of the rehearsal you review what time people need to be dressed and ready for pictures. Let them know where they need to meet for pinning on flowers. What time the groomsmen need to be in place to start seating guests. Also, cover things like where the restrooms are located so groomsmen are prepared to answer guest’s questions.

Then just accept that rehearsal won’t run perfect, but because you have done your homework it should be pretty close.

Greenville Hilton Garden Inn a New Site For Your Wedding or Reception

Today, I had a new experience; I got to wear a hard hat to tour a new venue site. We were invited to tour the new Hilton Garden Inn. It is still very much in the construction stage, but it was really fun to get to go through it and see the beginnings of something beautiful.

These 2 pictures show it as it is now and what it will look like in October when complete.

Located just off I-85 and I-385 and next to Woodruff Road among several new hotels and across from Greenridge Shopping Center it is a convenient site for both the guests and wedding party. It will have a 2,508 sq foot ballroom that will hold around 150 guests for a seated reception. Colors planned for the room are neutral rusts and browns making reception colors easily blendable with the on site colors. Table, chairs, linens and candles will be included in most of the packages. There is an area for the cocktail hour and a holding area for bridal party included.

The biggest plus is that there will be an outdoor patio area attached to the ballroom with beautiful landscaping and a gazebo area. This will make it perfect for those brides looking for an outdoor ceremony area close to their reception site .

For guests there will be 120 guests’ rooms with special pricing offered for wedding blocks. A bridal suite will also be available for getting ready.

Packages will be available in several different price ranges making it workable for most brides. It will be available for booking starting in October of this year. If you’d like to know more you can contact Elise Romano at 864-284-0111.

The Amazing Turner Inn in Greer, SC for Your Traditional Southern Wedding

Ok, listen up brides and grooms; there is a new event site available for weddings and receptions in Greer, SC. Today I had the opportunity to tour The Amazing Turner Inn with Chef Paul of Streetside Catering and his wife Charity Blumer. They were sweet enough to give us a personal tour of this “amazing” home turned event center.
If you are looking for the old Southern mansion, with majestic white columns and a grand staircase, this might be just the spot for you. While newly renovated back to its original grandeur the home contains little furniture on the main floor leaving plenty of room to turn it into your dream reception site. Hardwood floors, mural walls and crystal chandeliers make it a wonderful background for your traditional southern wedding. Indoors there is seating space available for around 80 guests, outside there is a large formal garden for either ceremony space or tented reception space if your need is greater.
Rental fees run from $1500 to $3000 depending on the package you choose. Streetside Catering is the caterer for all events. One added feature is the bride and groom can stay the night at the Inn in a honeymoon suite with a special breakfast served just for them the next morning.

More Ways to Personalize Your Wedding

As many weddings as we do, no two have ever been alike. Personalization of your wedding is so important. This can be achieved in any number of ways. One of our favorites is the family wedding photo table. We set up a table at the cocktail hour on which we place photos of the bride and grooms’ parents wedding, grandparents’ wedding and even great grandparents wedding photos. Beneath each picture is a card that tells the names of the people pictured and the year the photo took place. We have also had wedding veils, wedding dresses, garters, cake toppers and even century old handmade slips that were worn by relatives on their wedding day displayed.

Displaying these items at the cocktail hour gives your guests time to look at them and enjoy them before the reception officially starts. It is always a highlight of the cocktail hour

The Signing of the Bride's Shoes

One of the sweetest wedding traditions is the signing of the brides shoes. Each bridesmaid signs the bottom of the bride’s shoes. Tradition has it that the name that is most worn off the shoes at the end of the evening is the name of the next girl to get married. I don’t know if that is true or not, but I do know that having the signatures of each of your most special friends will make those shoes a favorite keepsake of your wedding for years to come.

More From Brooke and Joe's Wedding

As I promised here are more pictures from Brooke and Joe's beautiful wedding. The reception was held at the Embassy Suites here in Greenville. This was the first time I had done a reception at the Embassy and it was great. Their staff went out of the way to make everything perfect. I was very impressed.

For the reception, shimmer rose linens were specially brought in, as where the mahogany chivari chairs with white cushions. There were three different flowers arrangements, spread out among the tables and high boys. Votive candles were on each table along with menus designed in the colors of the wedding with the bride and grooms monogram.

The wedding cake was a show stopper. It was sitting on top of a lighted ice sculpture enhanced with a carving of the monogram. It was beautiful.

From the very beginning Brooke wanted a candy bar. Her very talented aunt put together this bar for her and it was perfect. Everyone was impressed.

There were lots of personal details at at this wedding that made it the couples own. We had a table set with wedding pictures of their parents and grandparents. We had coloring books all about the couple. We had a montage of pictures playing during the wedding and reception. It was all very special.

Brooke and Joe Get Married

This weekend was one of our most beautiful weddings yet. I wish our pictures did it better justice. It was spectacular. Actually everything about it was pretty perfect. But then I might be a little biased. I’ve known the bride's family for a whole lot of years. I worked with her dad long before I ever thought of being a wedding planner. They are a great family and were fun and easy to work with.

The wedding took place at the beautiful new Simpsonville First Baptist Church. Listen up ladies, this particular church is rentable for your wedding. Along with a beautiful sanctuary, even though it is huge, it has a great area for the bride and her girls to get ready before the wedding. A perfect sitting room for pictures, a huge restroom for doing makeup and a dressing area are all provided for the bride.

The colors of the wedding were coral, green and white. The ceremony flowers were designed by Dave McMillan of Memories by McMillan and they were beautiful.

It was a beautiful ceremony full of beautiful music and touching sweet moments. Come back tomorrow to see the equally beautiful reception.

Reception Music Ideas From Your Guests

A relatively new trend or idea that is gaining in popularity in the wedding world is the requesting of song ideas from the guests to be played at the reception. I like this idea for a couple of reasons. One, you get a really good idea of what type of music your guests enjoy. Too many times I have seen a bride and groom insist on a certain type of music they like that in the end does not appeal to their guests. The result is an empty dance floor most of the night. The second reason is this gives your guests a vested interest in your reception. They are eager to dance to the song they chose. Now of course this plan really only works if you are using a DJ or an IPod for your wedding.

The request for favorite songs can be printed on the RSVP or on a card by itself. The guests fill it out and return it with the RSVP. There are several popular wordings to request this:

A sweet one I found is:
We want our reception to be a celebration of us and the people we love and are sharing the day with. Please request a song or two that may remind you of us, or one that you would like to hear!
or
So here is your chance to tell us what songs make you want to dance. Your requests_______________________________
or
One song guaranteed to get you on the dance floor_____________________
Or you can always go with simply:
Song request #1__________________________
Song request #2_________________________

So if you are having trouble deciding what music you want played at the reception or you want to be sure your guest love the music, maybe this is the way you should go.

Candle Infinity Box Centerpiece For Your Wedding

I recently ordered this infinity candle box for use at a wedding and I love, love, love, it. It actually contains only four tea lights, but the way it’s constructed it reflects the candles to look like hundreds. Can you imagine how cool this will look if used on each table. It could be used in the place of flowers or along with flower petals or an arrangement. They come in several different sizes. I would love to have some really large ones, but as of yet, I haven’t been able to find any. If you know where I can, please let me know.

Another Way to Use Clemson Orange in Your Wedding

Willrich Bridal has done more than our fair share of Clemson weddings this year and we have a bunch coming up next year. The thing I hear over and over from Clemson brides is “I want to use orange but I don’t want it to scream Clemson.” This is not always easy to accomplish, especially in ballrooms around Clemson who all seem to have purple and orange as a theme.

So when I saw this design in the new issue of Ines Del Mas Weddings I couldn't help but be excited. The vibrant turquoise and orange are just beautiful. The black lace runners on the table give it that funky Spanish over the top feel. Even with touches of purple in your room, I still think this would still work. Used with lots of candles and black wrought iron holders it would be amazing. What do you think?

First Dance and Father/Daughter Songs

Two of the toughest choices for brides to make seems to be the first dance song and father/daughter song. I ran across this list published by Inside Weddings in their Summer 2009 issue. It is made up of songs chosen by their 2009 couples and I thought it offered some really good ideas. Hopefully this will help make those choices a little easier. Just click on the picture to enlarge it for a better view.

Fruit Bar for Your Reception

Picture Source: Inside Weddings Magazine Summer 2009

We all know that candy bars have been very popular at weddings. New on the scene are cookie bars, popcorn bars and pie bars. Why not go a little out of the box with a twist on an old favorite and try a fresh fruit bar. Imagine beautiful fresh in season fruits, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, melons balls, to name a few, all beautifully arranged for your guests to choose from. Martini glasses rimmed in colorful sugar, for the fruit to be placed in, set up on the bar. All of this topped off by an array of different accoutrements (creams, chocolates, sugars)to complete the treats. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.
