In another of our series of interviews of the most popular and best reviewed wedding vendors in the Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, upstate area, we wanted to introduce you to Holly of Holly’s Cakes. I recently contacted Holly and asked if she would take just a few minutes to visit with us and let my readers learn a little more about her and her business.
Tell me what makes your business special:
Holly’s Cakes LLC is a “People Friendly” business providing personalized/custom service in the design and creation of our bride’s wedding cake, bridesmaid’s cake, and groom’s cake. We create a relaxed environment with the bride to facilitate the flow of ideas resulting in a unique cake design. Our cake designs are based on the reflection of the couple, and something that really excites them!
We strive to have the wedding cake selection and cake cutting ceremony as one of the fun parts of the wedding which creates everlasting memories. We are continuously looking for new techniques and cake designs which provide additional value to the bride. Sometimes, just a new twist on an idea makes all the difference to the wedding cake experience.
Customers often tell us our cakes are “Delicious”, “Amazing”, “Awesome”, “Gorgeous”, “and “Beautiful” with a “Wonderful” touch and that we were so easy to work with.
How did you get started in this business?
In 1978, my first wedding cake was designed/created for a friend. Through the word-of-mouth, our cake business continued to grow year after year. The biggest compliment we get is when our customers refer us to other people. As a result, Holly’s Cakes LLC, a family owned and operated business, was formed.
Our business has been built based on treating people the way you want to be treated, making it easy for the bride during the cake selection/delivery process, and providing superior cake designs which taste “Awesome”. Flexibility is essential in working with brides today.
You can’t match the “magic of the wedding” and we wanted to be a part of it in some way and many brides have blessed us with that opportunity.
What do you like best about your job?
Seeing the bride (and groom, too!) get excited about the cake. They fall in love with their special design as it is sketched out. During the complimentary wedding consultation, I get a big kick out of the grooms who “really don’t eat cake”; they taste ours, and they change their mind!
Tell us about your favorite wedding or event:
Our favorite Wedding was the wedding cake delivery to Clemson Stadium West End which was coordinated by Willrich Bridal. Our wedding cake was wonderfully displayed with the Clemson stadium in the background.
Our favorite Wedding Event is always the Wedding Festivals Bridal Shows by far!! There is such an energy in the room with couples looking to plan their wedding. Brides looking at our designs and then tasting the samples – their reaction says it all – what encouragement!
Working with other vendors in the wedding industry has been such a blessing; we’ve come to know some really fabulous people!
What are the questions a bride should ask when choosing a vendor in your field?
Can you have different flavors for each layer?
Do you create custom cakes or do you have set designs to select from?
How far in advance do you bake and make the cake?
How do you price your cakes and also the serving size?
How soon do I need to reserve my date?
Do you offer complimentary tastings and consultations?
Do you offer any plateaus or bases to use for the cake?
Do you work with the florist if I want flowers on the cake?
What are your flavors/fillings that you offer and can you have more than one flavor?
What do you charge for delivery?
A good designer should never leave any question unanswered. These questions and more are covered prior to the consultation so when we meet all your focus can be on creating your dream cake!
What’s the hardest thing about your job?
Saying no to a bride who calls for a date when it’s already booked.
Anything else we should know?
If you can “Dream It”, we can “Do It”. Even if you have no ideas about your wedding cake, we can assist you in the design of your “Dream Wedding Cake”. We have about four times as many photos of our cakes to see at the consultation as we do online – that along with lots of “idea” prints in our file we can definitely create your special cake!
